Ways to Help Others in Onslow County

It’s the Season of Giving and there are a number of people and organizations in need of help this Christmas. From donations of unwanted clothes to unwrapped toys for kids in need to soup kitchens and dinners at the USO Jacksonville Center, Onslow County community members have plenty of opportunities to give back this month. Here’s three ways to give back in Onslow County:

1. Donate. While you may be piling the presents under the tree, many are simply hoping to have a single gift for their child or loved one. So while you’re preparing for the new, take a moment to take the old to a local charity or thrift store. Or, if you’d like to give a child in need the ultimate gift of surprise on Christmas morning, bring an unwrapped toy to a Toys for Tots drop-off location or support Onslow Community Outreach’s Christmas Cheer program. To find out how you can donate or volunteer with Christmas Cheer, visit www.onslowco.org/cc or call (910) 347-4646.

2. Support Local Military and Their Families. The world’s oldest operating USO, USO Jacksonville, has two extra special opportunities to help those who serve our country, as well as their dedicated family members. First, whether you want to bake or buy, the USO will be hosting their annual Operation Cookie Drop on December 21st. Volunteer to bring your favorite cookies, or buy some (we know, not everyone is Betty Crocker), to donate to those who are standing duty during the holidays.

In addition, the USO Jacksonville Center will also be hosting their annual Christmas Dinner from 11am-4pm on Christmas Day, for active duty, dependents and retired military members. A traditional Christmas meal, this annual feast is prepared and served by retired service members and volunteers. To learn more about this dinner and how you can attend or be involved, contact the USO today at (910) 455-3411 or visit www.uso-nc.org.

3. Volunteer. A hot meal is something many take for granted but the lack of one is never more evident than during the holidays. Did you know the Onslow Soup Kitchen is recognized as one of the most effective hunger prevention program in Central & Eastern NC? If you don’t have time to help serve at the soup kitchen, that’s ok! Onslow Community Outreach is always in need of monetary donations, as well as food donations. Visit their website to see how you can give back this holiday season.

If you’re looking for a way to give back this season, visit Volunteer Onslow to find area non-profits in need and ways you can help support your fellow military families and those Onslow County community members in need this Christmas season.
